8: A Steampunk anthology

A couple of posts conglomerated into one, here, for the VAPN, direct from The Process Diary:

I recently was invited to take part in a comic anthology by the fine folks over at www.illopond.com called 8: A Steampunk Anthology. 8 artists would create an 8 page story with a steampunk theme. The story could be anything we wanted: funny, dark, poetic, emotional – you name it. And boy, do they span the gammut. I had the good fortune of speaking with Sam Kirkman (the Captain of this small band for this round) and a handful of others. You can listen to the interview here:

I released two short tutorials on the making of the hero model for my particular story, Data Point:

And finally, the finished product is now available at Dani Jones’ new site, The Illustrated Section – Direct Link to Data Point (Or just search for “Paul Caggegi” or “Data Point” on the website).

It will be available in print in the anthology when the proof is finally sent to KA-BLAM! and future chats with the artists behind the stories that will also be found in the anthology. Two which are also available in the illustrated section are: For The Public Good by Samuel Kirkman, and Pest Control by Mark Harmon.

New to Blender? Intro to version 2.53

I’m aware many of you are into comics, creating comics, and otherwise enjoying the medium. Sometimes, references are hard to come by, and don’t you just wish you could make that scene yourself, set the camera angle, and a basic light just to get you started? Well: that’s where a good 3D software package can come in handy, and you can do all that to create as detailed (or basic) a reference as you like.

“But wait!” you say, “3D software is only used by the pros! It’s expensive! I haven’t got that kind of money!”

Luckily, a small, northern European company called NaN created Blender a few years ago, and it’s been the leading, free, open source 3D package out there. In fact, I happen to use it for my commercial and broadcast graphics for work and nobody bats an eyelid.

But those facts aside, it’s also time-consuming to learn Blender (or any 3D software for that matter). Which is why I’ve just released an “Intro to Blender 2.5x” video to get you through some of the more important parts of the interface and toolset. Hope this comes in handy for anyone interested in dabbling in a little 3D!
